Are You Feeling Supported?

Support systems for parents with Special Education students is paramount.  Whether it’s to share concerns, vent, or finding deeper levels of need such as advocacy, it’s absolutely critical.

What makes a support system so crucial is that maneuvering school as a parent is significantly different than when you were a student.  It’s exhausting for parents who make the assumption that school will “catch it” and help when their child struggles.  The reality for many families is that the school will not or is not providing the needed support and when concerns are expressed, they are met with the following statements:

  • Everyone is struggling right now.

  • We are all in this together…

  • You want a Special Education evaluation, but it is only speech.  They probably won’t qualify.

Don’t get me wrong, I know most teachers are doing the best they can right now to teach our children but we can’t afford to take a year off.  We can’t stand back and hope our children don’t lose more ground academically.  After all, hope isn’t a strategy.

I can be a “Mama Bear” and will fight for my children.  However, I am a firm believer, as parents, we have to make noise when we are not feeling heard.  It is unfortunate when it comes to this or you have to become… ”that parent,” but it happens.  Imagine if we were heard the first time we asked for help, how much further along would our children be?  This is why parents need a support system.  It is important to hear what others have gone through, learning from their experiences.  This sharing may help you hit fewer bumps in the road.  I am here to help and would be honored to be part of your support system.
