Be Bold! Be a Change-Maker!
Why is change so difficult and yet so important for our growth? How do you handle change? Are you someone who is constantly seeking change or someone who avoids it at all costs? Is change more difficult when it is thrust upon or when we can do it gradually? Embracing change comes easier to some than others. Personally, I view myself as somewhere in the middle, depending on what needs to change. Henry Ford was quoted saying, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.
We have had many changes thrown at us over the past year, some harder than others. When it comes to our children, school has been the most significant. There are some who are adamant that students get back to five days a week of in-person instruction. Students need to be provided an opportunity to learn, but how many were reaching their full potential prior to the pandemic? What if we provided more and different opportunities for our students? What skills do our children need to be productive adults? How do we achieve those skills? Moving to a different model has been a major adjustment to all, but it’s shown us that it’s time to help our children develop deeper skills around adaptability and perseverance.
It’s okay to acknowledge that life is hard and different right now and we are all trying to find our way through daily. Perhaps we could focus on grace and understanding instead of judgement. Maybe, instead of rushing to push our students back to what used to be, we embrace the different, focusing less on what we are missing out on and more on being change-makers. Henry Ford was a change maker, demonstrating adaptability, courage, and perseverance. Avoid just going back to what is comfortable and instead, embrace what could be an extremely beneficial change for our students, their families, and our community.
Be bold! Be a change-maker!
