Self-Care…What?

Why does self-care come easily for some while others struggle in allowing themselves the time?  When the concept of self-care is mentioned, many dismiss it out of hand as a buzzword or fad.  However, when it’s reframed as addressing our mental health we tend to take notice.  Some great examples of self-care are exercise, yoga, and meditation to name a few.  How does one go about finding the right self-care regiment for themselves?  How many of you are comfortable with looking at yourself that deeply in order to find out?

In my mind I know self-care is essential, however, it is something I tend to put last in my life.  It’s easier for me to take care of others than myself, “do as I say, not as I do.” While in the classroom, I spent the year taking care of my students and when summer arrived I was physically and emotionally exhausted.  My summers were critical to recharge and recalibrate, focusing on myself and my family.

Many of us have been going non-stop just to stay afloat since March 2020.  You can see it on everyone’s face and hear it in their voice.  Why do we wait until we are completely drained before taking notice?  It takes that much more effort just to get back to center when you are that drained.  It is important to recognize that our minds and bodies need to have time to decompress and reset (this does not mean Social Media!)  The more we take care of ourselves the more useful we are to others.  Remember, who gets the mask first on the airplane if there is an emergency situation?  When we skip these steps then we begin to feel tired, moody, and lack positivity.

Is self-care built into your daily routine?  What does it look like for you?
