Beyond Limitations

Autism awareness, like many other things, should not be limited to one month per year.  We must continue to support each other and find ways to be inclusive within our own communities.  One of the areas not often discussed or observed is what it looks like for individuals with Autism to find meaningful employment.

Since Autism is a spectrum and there is a range of needs for each individual, we have to think outside the box to help find employment.  Some districts and agencies have developed strong partnerships to carve out specifics and meaningful positions for these individuals.  Just as many of us were led towards our career path, these individuals need guidance and support.

Regardless of challenges such as; helping others that appear to have an “invisible” disability, unpredictability of the day, daily work environment, or sensory challenges, they still should be afforded the opportunity.

A wonderful success story is that of Michael Jacques.  Michael has autism and an intellectual disability. Despite his disabilities, he has become an author and public speaker. He is passionate about the importance of belonging and inclusion. What is truly amazing is that Michael can’t read or write.  His book, Can’t Read, Can’t Write, Here’s My Book was written entirely using an iPad’s speech-to-text function.  Michael does not believe in “can’t,” and speaks often on his ideas around inclusion, advocating independence, and the power of perseverance.

Another amazing individual is Nick Krueger.  Nick and his twin brother are both Autistic.  As similar as twins can be they also can be completely different.   Nick has a very limited vocabulary but has learned and enjoys expressing himself through his art. He has discovered calmness when he uses crayons, markers, and colored pencils to create his artwork.  With the assistance of his family, he has turned his art into employment.  Imagine going to work every day and doing exactly what you want to do.  Nick has this opportunity.

There are numerous stories such as these and you can explore more of each of them below. We must not self-imposed limits for these individuals based on what we think is best.  Let’s continue to embrace the differences and help everyone find a way to be the best version of themselves.
